This Los Angeles House Really Raises the Bar
  + stars: | 2024-03-06 | by ( Matt Shaw | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
This article is part of our Design special section about innovative surfaces in architecture, interiors and products. Lucía Cano and José Selgas are architects who have no fear of color. Founders of the studio SelgasCano in Madrid, they designed a conference center in Cartagena, Spain, that looks like a translucent organ glowing orange from within as if it were coursing with alien blood. Their Serpentine Pavilion — one of the famed temporary experimental structures displayed in London each summer — was a sprawling, tentacled cocoon with misty rainbow bands. A decade ago, the couple took their head-snapping palettes and structural whimsy to Los Angeles, where they built a co-working space in Hollywood called Second Home, with dozens of free-standing, canary-yellow-capped pods surrounded by greenery.

@brycebetts132 I've watched every video of the Sphere in Vegas and this new ad is by far my favorite. By comparison, running a billboard campaign in New York's Times Square for one to three days costs between $5,000 and $25,000, according to outdoor advertising company Inspiria Outdoor. A representative for the Sphere Entertainment Company said the company doesn't discuss financials. One TikTok video, which has notched up more than 14,000 likes, declared it " the best Sphere ad ." The Sphere debuted its first advertising campaign in September of this year and has featured brands including YouTube, the NBA, Heineken and Xbox.

CNN —A Picasso masterpiece entitled “Femme à la montre” fetched more than $139 million on Wednesday, becoming the second most valuable work by the artist ever sold at auction. The 1932 oil painting took center-stage at a two-day event at Sotheby’s in New York, at the sale of late philanthropist Emily Fisher Landau’s private collection. She is pictured here in front of Fernand Léger's "Étude pour Les Constructeurs" in her home in Manhattan in 2002. In a statement announcing the sale in September, Julian Dawes, Sotheby’s head of Impressionist & Modern Art for the Americas, said: “Picasso’s ‘Femme à la Montre’ is a masterpiece by every measure. WHY WE’RE HEREWe’re exploring how America defines itself, one place at a time. A cricket complex outside Houston hosts youth and professional players alike, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity in a changing city. July 15, 2023Drive northwest out of Houston, and as cow pastures wrestle back the flat expanse from the city’s tentacled sprawl, there arise along the road, suddenly, improbably, many, many cricket fields. Head south to find a small cricket stadium nestled in the suburbs, or west to find fields sprouting in county parks. The game of cricket — a bat-ball-and-wicket contest of patience and athleticism that was born in Britain and is barely understood by most Americans — has surprisingly taken hold in the land of Friday night football.

1 p.m. Get out on the waterAfter years of drought, Cachuma Lake — Santa Barbara’s expansive, tentacled reservoir about 30 minutes out of town — is full for the first time in more than a decade. Take Highway 154 over the San Marcos Pass to the Santa Ynez Valley to see the lake glistening between oak-covered hills. The drive is part of the experience, with potential stops including the Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park , where visitors can see centuries-old rock art by the Indigenous Chumash people, and the Tequepis Trailhead , for those who would rather hike than float. At Cachuma Lake Recreation Area (admission $10), take advantage of the abundant water by renting a kayak (from $15 per hour) or boat (from $45 for two hours) from the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company . Because the lake is a reservoir, swimming isn’t permitted, but the park has a pool and Hook'd Bar & Grill has picnic tables beside the lake with live music on weekends.

Lovecraft's novella "At the Mountains of Madness" — aren't quite perfect, according to the world's leading Lovecraft scholar, S.T. "While I'm sure Lovecraft would be grateful (and amused) by the application of his creation to AI, the parallels are not very exact," Joshi wrote. Read more: How to talk about AI like an insiderFirst of all, it's "shoggoth," not "Shoggoth," Joshi said. "It is a species name, not a proper name," Joshi wrote in an email to CNBC. For instance, a recent fake Toronto Blue Jays ad, created by a TSN producer who used text-to-video AI tech, is packed with horrifying images such as people feasting on each other's hot dog tentacles.

And yet, the Grand Canyon remains yoked to the present in one key respect. The Colorado River, whose wild energy incised the canyon over millions of years, is in crisis. Down beneath the tourist lodges and shops selling keychains and incense, past windswept arroyos and brown valleys speckled with agave, juniper and sagebrush, the rocks of the Grand Canyon seem untethered from time. The Grand Canyon is a planetary spectacle like none other — one that also happens to host a river that 40 million people rely on for water and power. At Mile 0 of the Grand Canyon, the river is running at around 7,000 cubic feet per second, rising toward 9,000 — not the lowest flows on record, but far from the highest.

Worden’s foes think nothing of siccing federal investigators on him and his team in an intramural death match. To put it succinctly, in Vance’s telling, NASA and its usual-suspect corporate partners were basically devoted to doing very little — or ideally, nothing — at maximum expense. So Worden’s team went in the opposite direction: The simpler and cheaper the better. Will Marshall, a physics prodigy and space expert, became the informal leader of a group of Ames recruits living in a Silicon Valley group house, known as the Rainbow Mansion. The housemates started working on the smallest satellites they could come up with — shoebox-size contraptions they would eventually call Doves.
By-the-wind sailors are beginning to wash up onto shores in California. Beaches from Dana Point to Point Reyes National Seashore have seen the creatures on their shores. Known by the scientific name Velella velella, the hydrozoa is actually a collection of polyps that float through the ocean using a translucent "sail" that sits upright on a flat, oval body to catch the wind. In 2014 and 2015, a Velella bloom resulted in billions of by-the-wind sailors washed ashore beaches from California to Washington. Dana Wharf Whale Watching did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
